A COMMUNITY radio station is teaming up with the Observer to bring you a news round-up as part of its breakfast show.

Our reporters will be discussing our biggest stories each week on the air at Harrow Community Radio, with the host, 21-year-old radio production student, Adam Allinson.

Keith Chilvers, director of HCR, based at Wealdstone Youth Centre, in High Road, set the station up three-and-a-half-years ago and says it has gone from strength to strength – growing from two shows on a Saturday afternoon to 14 shows a week and a team of 15 volunteers.

Mr Chilvers said: “There is a strong community feeling in Harrow.

“It is somewhere people live rather than just visit. One of our aims has been to give people a voice that may not necessarily have been heard – those who are under-represented.”

Mr Chilvers, 49, who runs a community centre in Harlesden, said he is passionate about radio and has enjoyed seeing the station grow.

A new sports show is due to be launched on Saturday. He said: “We are always looking for more volunteers but the response we have had so far has been great.”

Mr Allinson, a student at the Harrow campus of the University of Westminster, has been volunteering with the station since November and invites his listeners to be involved.

He is also a pianist at London’s Savoy hotel.

He said: “People want to be entertained in the mornings as they are getting ready or having their breakfast and getting their kids ready for school, and with texts and email people can send something in quickly.

“We get a lot of responses and have local guests as well, such as councillors, and people get involved with what we are talking about.”
