A shocking 126 people have been arrested since this morning as police targeted gang crime and drug supply to ensure Notting Hill Carnival remains safe.

Since 4am today (August 19) officers have also seized around £78,000 in cash, four firearms, ingredients to make crystal meth and a sizeable amount of crack cocaine from across London.

In Westminster, 40 suspected rocks of Class A drug crack cocaine were seized and in Southwark half a kilo of crack cocaine was found while in Bexley a further kilo of suspected cocaine was recovered.

The four guns found at an address in Parkfield Road, Lambeth, are believed to be a mach 10 machine - similar to the one which killed innocent bystander Sabrina Moss - a sten gun machine gun, a handgun and a BB gun.

Police are still working to arrest more people who could potentially impact on the safety of this weekend’s Notting Hill Carnival.

Many of those arrested will have bail conditions imposed on them banning them from Carnival in a bid to prevent crime.

Highly-skilled officers, known as ‘super recognisers’ will be at Carnival and in the CCTV control room looking for anyone banned from the event.

Chief Superintendent Robyn Williams, the Met’s spokesperson for Notting Hill Carnival, said they are committed to ensuring Carnival remains a safe, vibrant and enjoyable event and today’s operation was to ensure trouble-makers will not succeed.

She added: “If you know anyone who is planning to use Notting Hill Carnival to commit crime, please call Crimestoppers anonymously to help us keep the event a safe celebration.”

The free phone Crimestoppers telephone number is 0800 555 111.

In the days leading up to Carnival on August 24 and 25, the Met will be sending out basic crime prevention tweets on @metpoliceuk
