Barry Barnes has told the Gazette of one in Joel Street in the mid 1980s.

"I remember a similar one appearing outside the old Ship Inn pub," he said.

"Best shot at a year is 1980 to 1983. It was located on the side of the road, heading towards Northwood and was about 10 to 15 metres in size, and quite deep.

"I was working at Haydon Hall at the time, home of Eastcote Cricket Club and of course it was a bit too early for mobiles with cameras.

"I think it was spring or summer."

The cause of the collapse of a 6ft section of the road and subsoil on March 28 is still unknown, although Gazette reader Rob Cargill suggested possible links to former chalk mines in Northwood and Pinner.
