EIGHT weeks of road works are set for a congested cross-roads in North Greenford as National Grid makes vital upgrades to old gas pipes.

Work will begin on Monday, April 2 to replace 5.8km of ageing gas mains in Greenford Road at the junction with Whitton Avenue East and Whitton Avenue West.

The current traffic lights will be switched off and temporary four way lights put up. A temporary pedestrian crossing will also be in place.

This work is hoped to be completed within eight weeks, but upgrades to pipes in surrounding residential streets will continue until April next year.

National Grid will replace rusty metallic pipes with tough new plastic ones.

Engineers will need access to some properties, where the service pipes will be replaced, and have their gas supply temporarily cut off.

All people affected will be notified in advance but residents are advised to ask for official identification from engineers before letting them in their homes.

For more advice and to verify the identity of their employees, contact National Grid on 0800 096 5678.

Normal working hours will be from 8am to 5pm but could be longer on weekends. Work is also due to continue over the Easter bank holiday weekend and during the Easter school holiday period.

Project manager Mark Branch said: "National Grid's job is to connect people to energy they use and this project will ensure local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for years to come. We'll do everything we can to deliver this project with minimal hassle to the local community."
