Nominations for the 12 worst grotspots in Harrow have been pouring in to council offices, following the launch of a campaign

Harrow Council has received more than 40 nominations through its website and via nomination forms in the first few days, after the launch of its grotspot campaign. The joint initiative with the Harrow Observer series is asking you to help identify a dirty dozen of the worst graffiti-daubed walls, flytippers' favourite spots or litterbug havens.

As the worst offenders are identified, a council team will go and blitz the 'dirty dozen'.

The council will identify the first few areas, tackling one grotspot every week from now until Christmas as part of its borough-wide pledge to provide clean streets and a green environment for residents.

Council representatives and Observer staff will be in Harrow town centre between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday to hand out postcard nomination forms and give information on the campaign.

Councillor Susan Hall, deputy council leader and portfolio holder for environment services, said: "Harrow's streets are getting cleaner and the council continues to invest resources in this area. For instance, we recently agreed an extra £750,000 for environmental services and a portion of this investment funded a new team of 15 street clean-ers to ensure Harrow's shopping areas always look their best.

"We always welcome information from the local community and I would like to encourage residents to nominate any areas that they know are in need of a clean-up."

Editor David Tilley said: "Our surroundings, such as the state of our streets, landmarks and public parks, have a huge impact on how we feel about the area in which we live.

"I hope we can work together to help make the borough cleaner, brighter and ultimately a hap-pier place in which to live and work."

The closing date for nominations is November 30. However, the council will be considering suggestions from the middle of October, so get your responses in early.

A grotspot will be cleaned each week until just before Christmas, starting with Whitchurch Lane, Edgware, which the blitz team began to smarten up last week.

All you need to do to nominate your local area for a cleanup is cut out and fill in the coupon on the right and send it to us.
