A PENSIONER, who runs activities and trips, and has given a life line to the elderly in Acton, is up for a Gazette Pride in Our People Award.

Mary Tuohy, 65, has been running The Monday Club at St Mary's church, The Mount, Acton for 15 years with activities ranging from bingo to indoor bowls and darts to trips to the seaside several times a year.

She was nominated by Rachel Pepper from Acton Community Forum, who said: "She has run all these activities for decades, as well as regular trips, which are a true lifeline for the elderly, who otherwise could feel so isolated."

Mary, from Acton, who has four children and seven grandchildren, said: "I am pleased to be nominated in a way, but I have never looked for any reward. I try to cater for people's needs. I started when my mum died who felt isolated for years. It's very important to them as they also exchange numbers so they have an outlet when they get home. They can't wait for the summer to go on the trips. For some it's the only time they get out. Sometimes it's the highlight of their life. It helps keep me young."
