LAST weekend we yet again saw virtually all the Tube and Overground services between central London and the Borough of Harrow disrupted by planned works.

This time it was the turn of the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines to be severed throughout the entire weekend.

On Sunday, the Bakerloo and Overground routes joined them. The weekend before saw a similar picture with disruption also affecting the Piccadilly Line and Chiltern services.

In the past, posters used to show disruption for the coming month on the Underground. Now they say what to expect for the next seven days.

I can only conclude that this is either due to Transport for London's (TfL) embarrassment at the lack of weekend trains or the impossibility of showing a full month's disruption, such is the scale of closures now taking place across the capital every weekend.

Yes, I know, my own local line, the Metropolitan has the biggest gap between weekday and weekend usage and the promised upgrades are to pave the way for new rolling stock which we are told to be thankful for - even if it will have fewer seats.

But many must be getting sick and tired of the buck passing from the Mayor of London and TfL, who say it's all down to the contracting out of these works.

The time for excuses has come and gone. Companies running National Rail services have lost their franchises when they fail to deliver. TfL itself and its chairman, the mayor, should either sort this mess out or make way for somebody who can.
