I HAVE worked in Harrow borough as a PE teacher for 11 years and in all that time, Harrow has had a no jewellery policy for PE.

It is not appropriate for any children, especially young children, to wear jewellery to school if they cannot remove it for lessons.

Parents giving permission to take responsibility is only reliable if their son/ daughter gets injured, but useless if they injure another party in some way by them wearing jewellery.

If earrings have been worn for a number of years they can be removed easily on a daily basis. I do not wear earrings from Monday to Friday because of my job, and never have any issues putting them in on a Saturday.

As for the parent who was centre stage in the article, what a load of rubbish stating earrings can be worn for martial arts. She may let her son wear them, but that does not mean it is safe, or appropriate. It just goes to show how irresponsible she really is.

I fully back Cedars School trying to enforce a no jewellery policy, as this will lead to safer practice in schools.
