RESIDENTS in Ealing may not have to pay a penny if they want to hold a street party to celebrate next year's Royal wedding.
The borough council said people will only have to pay if they wish to obtain an events licence or hire traffic cones to close off streets.
The Government's communities secretary Eric Pickles said he would encourage parties across the country to celebrate the wedding. People across the country are already thought to be planning for street parties to celebrate the highly-anticipated event on April 29.
A spokeswoman for Ealing Council said: “We've had one enquiry about a street party, but not an application as such. Residents have to fill in a street and park hire form available on the website. If they are carrying out a licence-able activity, such as drinking, they'll need to get a licence which costs £23."
A licence would only be required if alcohol was going to be sold, or if a live band was playing.
The spokeswoman added: “They'll also need a temporary traffic order to close the road. This is free, but hire of cones and signs are chargeable. Residents don't need to hire cones. They could just block off road using other means.”
By comparison, residents in neighbouring Hounslow would have to pay £2 less if they want to get a licence for activities.
