TEACHERS striking over changes to their pension scheme have forced nine schools to shut today and 27 more to partially close.

The remaining 16 council-run primary and high schools in the borough are open despite the capital-wide action called by the National Union of Teachers and the University and College Union.

Nick Grant, Ealing secretary for the NUT, said government plans to make teachers pay more, work longer and get less for their pensions are unnecessary as a deal negotiated in 2006 means the current system is affordable.

He added: "After these reforms young teachers would lose about 49 per cent of their income, after tax, student loan, national insurance and pension contributions, before they get their pay.

"At a time when it's almost impossible to afford London housing and the cost of transport is so high how do they expect teachers to be attracted or be able to stay in schools?"

Central Ealing and Acton MP Angie Bray said the reforms are vital to account for people living longer and rebalance the system so public sector workers pay more for what is still a "generous" pension deal.

She added: "It's a double disappointment for Londoners who have had to suffer the inconvenience of all the other strikes which have taken place and now have their own special strike."
