Cyclists in Ealing can be more reassured their wheels are safe thanks to the council's subsidised bike lock scheme.

The aim is to help reduce bike theft in the borough and the project is directly funded by Transport for London (TfL), and is in partnership with the Metropolitan Police.

People can take their old lock to one of six independent bike shops in the borough and swap it for a £20 discount on a silver or gold ‘sold secure’ lock normally costing at least £30.

The £20 discount will be applied to 400 locks, given on a 'first come first served' basis while stocks last. One lock is allowed per customer and they are available at the following cycle shops:

Ealing Cycles, Bond Street, Ealing
The Bike Shop Greenford, The Broadway, Greenford
There Cycling, Boston Road, Hanwell
The London Bike Hub, Greenford Park Residents Association Hall, Queens Avenue, Greenford
The Bicycle Repair Station, Goldsmith Road, Acton
The Bicycle Repair Shop, The Vale
Woolsey of Acton, Acton Lane

To redeem the offer, customers need to hand in their old lock, show ID and fill in a short form in store.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “ With more and more residents taking up cycling, it is fantastic that we are able to offer this discount scheme. The best form of prevention is a high standard U-lock. Most bikes stolen in Ealing are secured with poor-quality locks, so I encourage all cyclists to take advantage of this offer and upgrade their lock to reduce the likelihood of theft."

Sergeant Anthony Beasley, of the Metropolitan Police, said: “The scheme received very positive feedback from cyclists during the pilot last year with TfL directors impressed with the success of the partnership.”
