EVERY potholed street and cracked pavement in the borough will be fixed, according to council chiefs after they signed the biggest contract in the authority’s history.

A total of £800 million will be spent fixing and maintaining roads and footpaths across Hounslow over the next 25 years as part of a deal agreed at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.

Vinci Ringway will take over responsibility for road maintenance and street cleaning as part of the private finance initiative) agreement, with about 200 council staff transferring to their employment. The company, part of French construction giant Vinci, beat builders Balfour Beatty to the lucrative contract.

It will be responsible for street lighting, gritting and cleaning, among other areas, as well as maintaining roads and pavements.

The firm will spend £100m over the next five years restoring the borough’s 259 miles of road and 459 miles of pavements, much of which is badly in need of work.

The Department for Transport will fund the scheme to the tune of approximately £14m a year, with the council contributing £10.5m a year at current rates.
