A new primary school is due to open in Brentford next September after getting the green light from the Department for Education.

Floreat Brentford Primary School has yet to confirm where in Brentford it will open but its preferred site is one in Commerce Road within developer ISIS' Brentford Lock West Development.

Floreat was one of two free schools in the borough to be approved yesterday, the other being Edison Primary School.

The new school is one of several free schools being opened in London by Floreat Education in areas the charity has identified as being most in need of extra school places.

The charity, which was set up by James O'Shaughnessy, a former adviser to David Cameron, already has approval to open a primary school in Wandsworth next year. It is also hopes to open free schools in Southall and Alperton in September 2016.

Mr O'Shaughnessy said: "The Floreat team is incredibly excited about creating an outstanding new primary school for Brentford.

"Our focus will be on delivering a rich knowledge-led academic curriculum and developing children's character virtues, setting them up for a life of success and wellbeing whatever they choose to do.

"We are looking forward to working closely with the local community, Hounslow Council and the DfE to secure the smooth opening of this much-needed new school."

As well as the academic side of their education, Mr O'Shaughnessy said the school would concentrate on developing pupils' character strengths, with a focus on honesty, curiosity, perseverance and serving others.

He added that it was important to ensure children had an understanding of the different cultures in the area in which they live.

As a free school, Floreat Brentford will not be subject to local authority control. It will be a two-form entry school, welcoming its first 60 reception pupils in September next year.

It will be run by executive principal Paul Campbell, who is currently headteacher at the Oftsted-rated 'outstanding' Primrose Hill Primary School. Mr Campbell will also take the helm at Floreat Wandsworth.

Nearly 180 sets of parents expressed an interest in sending their child to the school in either the first or second year during the application process.

Mr O'Shaughnessy said he hoped to open the registration process as soon as possible, following discussions with the council.

A site for the new school has yet to be secured by the Government but Mr O'Shaughnessy said Commerce Road was its preferred location.

"That's in the middle of the town where a lot of the new developments are going on and where the demand is but nothing's confirmed yet. All we can say is the school will be in Brentford," he added.

Brentford and Isleworth MP Mary Macleod said: "This is great news for local parents and will help to address the acute need for school places in west London.

"When I met Mr O'Shaughnessy with the former education secretary this year, we talked about Floreat's plans for a new school on the site of the old bus depot in Commerce Road.

"I also worked with the Mayor of London to make sure that the old bus depot could be used in the future for a new school.

"It is fantastic that we will now finally have a new primary school in Brentford and I wish Floreat every success as they move to the next stage of the application process."

Hounslow Council has already expanded nine primary, five infant and five junior schools across the borough since 2013 in an attempt to meet the growing demand for places.

A further five schools are due to increase in size next September and the council plans to almost double the size of Wellington Primary School from September 2017.

There is also a big shortage of secondary school places forecast in the borough, with the equivalent of four new schools needed to meet the growing demand.
