THOUSANDS of pounds has been pledged to a Harlington swimming pool in a bid to fix its damaged roof.

Council planners have approved requests to repair William Byrd Swimming Pool in Victoria Lane, Harlington after it emerged a large investment was required to bring the popular pool back into top condition.

Council Leader Ray Puddifoot, said: "I have approved expenditure to repair the roof, and have set aside £95,000.

"It has been quoted at £70,000 but these things sometime cost more so we are playing it safe, and any left over funds we will allocate elsewhere.

"The William Byrd trust took over from the Council 10 years ago and do a fantastic job so they deserve our support."

The work is set to begin in early Spring at the pool which attracts attendances of around 27,000 a year.

It is also used by six schools and is the training venue for successful Hillingdon swimming club, the Seabyrds.
