A new Brentford pub has bowed to public pressure after sparking a Twitter storm by claiming to be in Kew.

One Over the Ait, the riverside pub within the huge new development by Kew Bridge, incurred the wrath of the community by describing its location as Kew on its website.

That decision prompted a furious response on Twitter from Brentfordians who are already sensitive over the erosion of their town's identity by developers choosing to associate their projects with the more affluent Kew, just over the Thames.

@BIAS (Brentford Independent Association of Supporters) tweeted: "There is nothing wrong with being in Brentford, Middlesex. Kew is over the water and in Surrey. Please amend your website."

@BrentfordHeritage put it more succinctly: "Your website says that you are in Kew!?! Do you need a map?"

The slip-up was compounded by the fact it is a Fuller's pub and the Chiswick brewery supplying its beer is only a short stroll up the road.

Not wanting to upset its neighbours before it even opens, the pub quickly corrected its website, and the Twitter community was quick to forgive.

@BrentfordHeritage tweeted yesterday: "Thanks you for listening. Welcome to Brentford!"

The pub was due to open on November 14, but the opening has been postponed to later in the month due to a delay in connecting the gas supply.

A Fuller's spokeswoman said: "We realise the issue around the location of our new pub, One over the Ait, and although the pub lies in Brentford, it is right next to Kew Bridge and Kew Bridge station – so to make it easier for customers to find it, we had chosen to refer to it as Kew.

"However, we take the points on board, and from now on we will be referring to it as One over the Ait, Kew Bridge – making it easy to find and giving it a correct location."
