Nice to see a letter from Philomena Bach on these pages - she's the director of environment and consumer protection [at Hillingdon Council] - I must admit I was beginning to doubt her existence.

I've written to her on several occasions in the last few years about the traffic madness in Rockingham Road. Never had the courtesy of a reply.

Still, her advice was worth waiting for: drivers 'drive safely and observe road conditions, including speed restrictions at all times.' Right, that's that taken care of.

Now what else is there? Must be something?

Ooh, I know, there's pollution! I ought to deal with that.

Right, any polluters out there you must stop it at once; no, I mean it - it's very bad.

I wonder what her salary is? Not an unreasonable question as it comes out of our rates.
