RECENTLY some friends who worked for La Senza and Best Buy in Hayes suffered the distress of losing their jobs, and it looks like Nestle staff will now have the same dilemma.

Nestle is well known in Hayes and has been employing local people for many years. It has also been at the forefront of the local community, supporting many local events and charities and especially cancer charities.

Admittedly, a lot of staff have been offered the chance to relocate to Derby, but as John Bond said, it's not realistic or practical for many (Workers in 'critical' talks over closure, Gazette, January 25).

The older staff may have lived in Hayes for many years and do not want the stress of moving.

Some have to help sick or elderly relatives and some may have youngsters happily settled in local schools or colleges preparing for exams.

At a time when unemployment is at an all time high, it therefore seems ironic that it was recently reported that a new Asda had been turned down as it would create the 'wrong sort' of jobs.
