Would you spend over £1,000 for a single night in a West London apartment?

That's the asking price for some of the houses on short-term leasing site Airbnb.

Airbnb is a website that allows people to rent out their homes at extravagant or cheap prices for as little as one night at a time.

Perhaps most surprisingly the most expensive property currently up for rent in west London is a mysterious private room in Southall, which only sleeps two and is going for £1,233 a night.

getwestlondon has contacted the home owner to find out what is so special about the room, however as yet a reply has not been received.

Other extravagant prices include a £1,019 a night apartment in Eaton Square, Belgravia.

The property has four bedrooms and comes with a minimum stay of five nights, meaning that you'd be set back about £5,100 in total.

Older entries on the site show how people take advantage of the system to cash in on events with a house next to Portobello Road going for as much as £1,600 a night during the Olympic Games in 2012.

At the cheaper end of the spectrum short term let opportunities - as provided by Airbnb and others such as Spare Room - are also not without their problems.

At present anyone outside London - although this will soon change to include the capital - can rent their property on a short-lease without requiring a permit and this can sometimes cause friction among local residents.

Even with property owners requiring a permit in London, Westminster council alone has taken action against 7,000 such properties over the past three years with large properties often being used as party venues.

One council report from a flat in Pimlico described how there was: "Shouting all night until 8 am the next day. No one, on any of the four floors, got any sleep."

"By the end of the night the communal areas were trashed - there was blood on the walls, food and rubbish crushed into the carpets and plant pots thrown from the balcony onto the streets below."
