I WAS interested to read last week's article about the National Front background of Phil Andrews (Chronicle, October 30).

For the record, I stood for the Labour Party against Councillor Andrews in Isleworth in 2006, slashing his majority. I have been short-listed to oppose him again next May.

How he can claim to have changed and yet continue to describe Nick Griffin as his 'old mucker' is beyond me. On a local internet forum, he said the BNP leader is 'interesting to speak to' as well as 'very clever, witty and articulate'.

Having seen Mr Griffin's pathetic performance on Question Time, I would say that he is none of these things.

On the same internet forum in July 2006, Mr Andrews saw fit to launch a blistering attack on the anti-fascist organisation Searchlight.

Another cause for concern is the fact that his blog contains a photo tribute to the late Tom Reader, who in 1987 campaigned for National Front member Alan Mineham as a committee member of the New Ivybridge Tenants' Association.

These facts aside, I look forward to taking on Mr Andrews over the many bread and butter issues on which he has let his constituents down.

He is part of a Tory-led administration that has cut £2.4m from the education budget, and has now announced he is sending his kids to public school.
