THE grand unveiling of a 60ft mural wall dedicated to fallen soldiers was at the heart of the Hanworth Royal British Legion Club's Remembrance Day.

More than 2,000 people joined the annual parade led by the British Airways pipe band, which was followed by the club's garden opening and mural uncovering by special guest Tommy Walsh, ex-Ground Force star.

Veterans, local scout groups, Air Cadets and officers from the Royal Navy Association, mustered at Hanworth RBL and marched to the Cenotaph on Main Street, Feltham, in its biggest Remembrance Sunday parade on November 11.

Member of Hanworth RBL, Patricia Murphy, said: "Everybody was aghast when they unveiled the wall and garden. It was an artistic tribute to those who gave their lives for the freedom and peace enjoyed today. Steve Atkins headed up, drove forward, and managed the project to the end. 'Steve Atkins and the Garden Gang' made up of committee and club members are the ones who helped transform the car park into a garden. The garden and unveiling of the mural was absolutely amazing."

Club committee member Mr Atkins led the three-year project and brought onboard cousin Sam Tanner BB3 band member and talented artist from Hanworth, who created the mural wall to life depicting both war and peace.

Mr Atkins from Hanworth, said: "It was quite poignant in being unveiled on Remembrance Day. The whole pace was packed and jaw-dropping wows could be heard from the crowds. It is (the mural) an artist production of war and remembrance. One part is of war scenes and battle fields and then goes into peacetime with poppy fields and a Cenotaph. The garden project evolved and was a big community effort to develop a family friendly garden."

It is believed the mural is the first of its kind in the RBL in the country.
