Mary Macleod today promised to write to Lord Jeffrey Sterling urging him to bring the royal barge Gloriana to Brentford after the boat was rejected by Twickenham .

The Brentford and Isleworth MP said she would make the case for Brentford to Lord Sterling, who paid for the boat to be built.

"I think the people of Brentford would love to have Gloriana. I will write to Lord Sterling and ask that he definitely consider bringing the Gloriana home," said Ms Macleod.

Richmond Council and the Gloriana trustees announced this morning they had dropped plans to house the boat in Orleans Gardens in the face of overwhelming public opposition.

Lord Sterling said he and the boat's trustees would now explore further locations along the river.

Hounslow Council leader Steve Curran promised to work with community groups to find a home in the borough for 'a treasured piece of British history'.

"If Richmond does not want to host the royal barge, we are more than happy to. We are proud the Gloriana was built and launched in our borough and we will be working with local community groups to find a home in Hounslow for a treasured piece of British history," he said.
