THE PLIGHT of up to 50 rough sleepers living under the M4 in Heston was addressed at a meeting last Friday (March 2).

Feltham & Heston MP Seema Malhotra joined representatives from the UK Borders Agency, the Indian High Commission, homelessness charities and Ealing and Hounslow councils to discuss the issue.

The Chronicle has reported in recent weeks how the rough sleepers, most of whom are believed to be from the Punjab, have been unable to return home because of delays getting travel documents from the Indian High Commission.

However, Ms Malhotra said representatives from the commission had promised last Friday to work more closely with other agencies and help streamline passport applications.

"The issues are extremely complex and we're dealing with people who are now living in a state of chaos but the will is there to work together to solve the problems," she added.

The site has been used as a homeless shelter for more than a year, but the numbers sleeping there have increased considerably in recent months.
