FROM this week, the Hounslow Chronicle is based at new offices in Hammersmith.

But although our reporters will be making the short trip along the Piccadilly line, much of the furniture is going to help the homeless.

Desks, chairs and filing cabinets are among the office fittings being donated to Trinity Homeless Projects, which supports scores of people in Hounslow and Hillingdon.

The furniture will be sold at one of the charity's two shops in Uxbridge and Yeading, which offer vital work experience for homeless people as well as helping fund the trust's other work.

Trinity was officially formed in 2007, but had been part of the homeless charity Yeldall for nearly 20 years before that. Last year it provided accommodation, training and employment support to more than 200 people from across Hounslow and Hillingdon.

But it had to turn away twice that number of people because it did not have the resources to help them all - a shocking indication of the level of homelessness in the two boroughs.

Andy Robertson, the charity's communications manager, said: "All our residents are long-term unemployed, half are ex-offenders or have drug or alcohol problems and 79 per cent are below level one literacy, which is that of primary school pupils.

"A lot of our work is about improving people's skills and self-confidence so they can be effective in the open job market." Trinity has a hostel in Pownall

Gardens, Hounslow, as well as a number of flats, providing a total of 41 beds for homeless people.

The charity, which relies on a mixture of grants, donations and income from its shops, also provides numeracy and literacy training, as well as advice on looking for work and CV writing.

The charity hopes to open a new shop in Hounslow within the next year. In the meantime, anyone wishing to donate items can call the Yeading store on 020 8797 9505.
