RESIDENTS of Mortlake have called on the council to build an ice rink on the site of the Stag Brewery when it closes.

In a survey sent out by local Conservative councillors and parliamentary candidate Zac Goldsmith, 2,248 of the 2,517 respondents asked for an ice rink to replace the ill-fated brewery.

Speculation about the future of the Lower Richmond Road site has been rife since January, when owners InBev announced plans to close the brewery, the site of beer making since 1487, in December 2010. About 200 workers will be affected.

The land is privately-owned and many fear it could be snapped up by a housing developer.

The original Richmond Ice Rink closed in 1992 - despite a concerted campaign to keep it open.
