Last week Public Health England named Hillingdon as the London borough with the highest amount of overweight and obese people.

Following the news, Hillingdon Council has promised to continue to grow sport facilities in the borough and introduce more healthy eating programmes.

"Obesity levels across the country have been increasing for 30 years and we are already working hard to tackle this long-standing problem," said Nigel Dicker, deputy director for public safety.

"The transfer of public health responsibilities to local government in April 2013 brought with it an opportunity for us to do something positive, and so a top-level group was set up to develop coordinated action across council departments and partner agencies such as the NHS to tackle obesity.

"One of the group's priorities is to ensure that families are supported in their efforts to reduce weight and improve health.

"We have also arranged a wide range of activities for residents throughout 2014 to get them more active and are establishing programmes to improve diet and nutrition.

"While we appreciate that the council and its partners must work together to tackle obesity, there are many opportunities to encourage healthier lifestyles, with our excellent parks and outstanding leisure facilities, including the recently refurbished Highgrove Pool and Leisure Centre, and the outdoor gym facilities in our local parks."
