A quiet cul-de-sac, leafy residential street and grass verge beside a parade of shops were the latest areas to be blitzed as part of Harrow Council's 'dirty dozen' clean-up campaign.

The council, in a campaign supported by the Harrow Observer series, asked people to help identify a dirty dozen of the worst graffiti-daubed walls, flytippers' favourite spots or litterbug havens.

The worst offenders have been identified and a council team is well on the way to blitzing the 'dirty dozen'.

Ufford Road, Harrow Weald, Old Church Lane and Canons Corner, Edgware, brought the total number of grotspots cleaned up to 10. The council has committed to tackle the 12 worst offenders by the end of the year.

The blitz team raked up leaves and picked up beer cans, plastic bags, crisp packets and junk food packaging.

The squad used garden strimmers to tame the undergrowth, and high-tech hoses blasted graffiti from walls.

Yatindra Ranpura, 29, of Ufford Close nominated Ufford Road.

Mr Ranpura said: "This area has been a problem for some time. Beer cans and litter are dropped here at the weekend, and the bushes are very overgrown.

"It's great that the road is being cleaned up, and over the past year I have noticed that the standard of street cleaning has improved across the borough."

Councillor Susan Hall, portfolio holder for environment services, said: "We are absolutely committed to making Harrow a cleaner and greener borough and I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to nominate sites.

"Even though the grotspot campaign is drawing to a close residents can still contact the council and report any problem areas."
