I AM a non-smoker, but this does not stop me from fuming when I see the Liberal Democrat-governed Richmond Council is using our council tax to fund free, plastic pocket ashtrays (non-smokers may apply too) at the same time as our the pavement repair programme is underfunded and many of our roads are riddled with potholes.
Our environment is being cluttered up with a series of costly Big Brother-style banners promoting this waste of our hard-earned money - for instance, there are five large vertical lamppost banners within yards of each other in Kew Village alone - at the same time that many a local eyesore created by overflowing litter bins is ignored.
It does not stop there. We can also claim for free food waste liners, which sounds like a great idea until you realise that they have also been paid for by our council tax!
Could the timing of this so-called 'free offer' be an attempt to buy our votes in the forthcoming local elections? I suspect that many of us will not be bought this easily.
