Explosions and leaking roofs are just some of the problems tackled by a Maida Vale vicar in the last 25 years.

On Sunday, a silver anniversary party will be thrown for Father Gary Bradley at St Saviour's church, in Warwick Avenue, by friends, family and members of the congregation.

For the last 13 years, the reverend has also been working at St Mary's church, in Paddington Green, Paddington.

During Father Bradley's tenure, St Savior's roof has been repaired three times, even though it was only built in 1976.

He added: "Another time, the floor of the church exploded. One morning, we came in to find the concrete under the tiles had contracted, which caused the tiles to explode. But for me, the most memorable times are the every day events I'm so lucky to be involved in.

"As a vicar, people let you into part of their lives and I feel so privileged.

"The best thing about our church is the feeling of a family, that everybody is welcome to come here."

Father Bradley said he had thoroughly enjoyed the last 25 years.

He said: "There is a tradition in the Church of England to ring the church bell for the number of years you intend to stay at that church. When I started on November 17, 1983, I rang the bell 40 times and I think some people were quite surprised. If all goes well, I'm hoping for another 15 years here.

"I rather like the idea of being with people, and seeing them through their life events from births, to marriages, to deaths. People tend to move around in a modern society, but I think there should be stability."

In 1985, Father Bradley helped set up the Westminster Bereavement Service at the church.

He said: "It's one of my proudest achievement because it really helps people come to terms with their grief. We've also done a lot of work with women who have suffered miscarriages."
