A walk to honour a gorgeous baby girl who died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) was done by people as far as California.

Ella Chaplin was born on March 16 this year and died on May 22 in her sleep, before she was even 10 weeks old.

Her mother Aimee Hetherington, 29, of Ealing , organised a Mile in Memory for her daughter, attended by about 70 people in Lammas Park last Saturday (October 4).

Friends and family turned up, including members from Milton Keynes and locals who had seen Ella’s story in the Gazette last week, raising £130 on the day which has contributed to the current total of £3,800 for the The Lullaby Trust to boost awareness and help research SIDS.

Ms Hetherington was touched by the solidarity of family in California who got up at 3.30am to match the time of the walk in Ealing and did their own mile with their community, letting off balloons as Ms Hetherington did at Ella’s funeral.

Family and friends in California

The 29-year-old said: “Everybody is getting involved it has been amazing.

“I wanted to make it a family day and people turned up with their children. The rain did not stop us it was great.

“We had donation boxes and buckets.

“One lady turned up from the Lullaby Trust and brought leaflets because I want people to go away and read about it.

“My midwives and bereavement support group from West Middlesex hospital have been great, my uncle Lee Maloney has signed up to do the London Marathon for the Lullaby Trust next year and one of my best friends Tania Perks has done a bake sale at work to raise money for the cause.”

SIDS is the unexpected and unexplained death of an apparently well baby.

After every test possible to get to the bottom of why this happened, Ella’s parents Aimee Hetherington and Craig Chaplin had to accept there was no explanation.
