A father-of-two who completed the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 says he was spurred on by the thought of the teenage cancer victim in whose memory he was cycling.

Dave Young, of Castle Road, Isleworth, made it round the shortened 86-mile course in driving rain on Sunday (August 10) in just 3h46m, putting him, he said, in the top 600 of more than 20,000 amateur cyclists to reach the finish line - not bad for a 50-year-old.

The Network Rail quantity surveyor was cycling in aid of Children with Cancer, in memory of his boss's 14-year-old son Ben Parkhouse, who died of leukaemia in June.

Having already passed his original £2,250 target , he now aims to raise £3,500 for the charity. Network Rail has promised match his total with a donation to its chosen charity CLIC Sargent, which also helps young people with cancer.

"The weather was of biblical proportions and there were lots of crashes, including a big one which I narrowly avoided in Richmond Park," he said.

"It was emotional doing it for Ben. Thinking about him helped spur me on whenever I endured a bit of pain because I knew it was nothing like what he went through."
