THE cold weather can feel particularly harsh when we read about gas and electricity bills going up by seven to nine per cent for many energy company customers. The price hikes could cost the average household about £100 a year.

A London-wide home insulation programme which was trialled in 8,000 homes over the past year managed to save them each an average of £173 on their bills. That more than compensates for the inflation-busting price hikes.

That's why the Mayor of London has so badly let Londoners down by failing to defend this home insulation programme. The government is likely to axe his part of the funding, and councils have failed to stump up enough money across London to meet the mayor's target. Up to 200,000 households could miss out as a result.
