MAYOR of London Boris Johnson has pledged £3.6 million of Transport for London funding to improve Hillingdon's transport network.

Mr Johnson today (Thursday) announced the cash would be allocated to Hillingdon to improve cycling facilities, cut congestion during the school run and improve the quality of the roads.

He said: "I am awarding Hillingdon a budget of £3.6 million next year for local schemes that will make travelling safer, more accessible and more environment-friendly, helping to improve the quality of life for people across the borough."

More than £800,000 will be used to improve the road surface of Stanwell Moor Road in Longford, £85,000 will go on cycle training, £50,000 on identifying crime hotspots and £15,000 on road safety measures around schools.

A further £300,000 will be used to improve safety at Cherry Lane roundabout, in West Drayton, by closing the east/west road that cuts through the middle of the roundabout.

Improvements are set to start in the financial year 2009/10.
