A silver dynamite plunger ushered in the festive season in Harrow on Saturday, as the lights were switched on.

Mayor of Harrow Councillor John Nickolay was on hand to set the town centre aglow, at the start of a season of celebrations, including the Hindu festival Diwali and Christmas.

White snowflakes sparkled and stars twinkled along St Ann's College and Station Road and performances from local youngsters brought seasonal cheer to the crowds.

Councillor Marilyn Ashton, portfolio holder for planning, development and enterprise, said:

"Harrow Council wants the town centre to look as vibrant and attractive as possible. The economic outlook may be gloomy but our town centre certainly won't be.We hope everyone enjoys the spectacle."
