ABOUT 6,000 revellers packed Pitshanger Lane to celebrate the switching on of its Christmas lights.

London's deputy mayor Richard Barnes, Ealing North MP Steve Pound and Ealing mayor John Gallagher led the countdown at the 14th Light Up The Lane.

Afterwards residents enjoyed a range of entertainment, perused stalls and indulged in mulled wine and hearty food at the event on Sunday.

A unicyclist, juggler and a stilt walker wandered through the crowds, Father Christmas handed out sweets while a puppet show and a barbershop quartet from Capital Chorus singing group also entertained residents.

School choirs from Montpelier, St Gregory's and North Ealing primaries took to the stage, as did a samba band from St Benedict's School and the Ealing Rock Choir.

Beth Gregory, of the Pitshanger Community Association Events team, said: "It was fantastic. We were a bit nervous as it was the first time we'd held it on a Sunday but it went really well. I think the mild weather really helped as everyone was able to stand around for a long time drinking and chatting and watching the stage shows."

It finished with a fireworks display which Ms Gregory described as "short, sharp and spectacular".

She added: "We couldn't afford to have one last year but the traders have really rallied round to get behind and sponsor the event. We decided to move it to Sunday because we have to close the lane early to set up and this way it had less impact on businesses. Judging by the atmosphere and how busy it was residents didn't seem to mind."
