A MAN who wandered onto the rail tracks at busy rush hour suffered a severed arm after being struck by a Metropolitan Line train.

Police confirmed the 51-year-old had severed an arm but survived, after the incident last Tuesday evening at Ickenham station.

An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene shortly after 5.30pm, landing in the car park of the nearby Compass Theatre, in Glebe Way, Ickenham. The first paramedics were at the scene within just five minutes. He was taken to the Royal London Hospital, in Whitechapel, east London.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "The man was taken to hospital for treatment for a serious injury to his arm. His injuries are not currently believed to be life threatening."

The police confirmed that the man was from Ruislip, but his identity, and the circumstances which led to him being on the tracks, are still unknown.

Police closed off the station to commuters, and both the Metropolitan Line and Piccadilly Lines were suspended, causing disruption to thousands of commuters, which continued throughout that evening.
