A man who was arrested on Armistice Day after a security alert saw shoppers evacuated from Uxbridge town centre, has been released on bail.

Police arrested a 40-year-old man on Tuesday (November 11) on suspicion of making a threat to cause an explosion.

He has now been bailed to return to a west London police station in early December.

People were evacuated from the intu Uxbridge shopping centre and shops along High Street Uxbridge at around 12pm after the threat was alerted to police.

Many gathered outside Hillingdon Civic Centre, which just over an hour earlier had been the site of a moving Remembrance Day service.

According to intu general manager Sally Peppard, the incident caused "no end of chaos" for shoppers in the town centre, who were unable to re-enter the shopping centre or its car park until 2pm.

The incident also coincided with a soft launch for the opening of new Uxbridge eatery Wagamama, which had to be cut short.
