A MAN from Kingsbury has been jailed for four months after attacking a mother in front of her children following a row on a bus.

On January 17 last year an argument started over a pram being nudged by another pram on the number 83 bus in Barnet.

Amy Boyle, 19, verbally abused another mother and spat at her before her partner  Nathaniel Pope, 21, of Derwent Rise, Kingbsury, joined the row.

He then attacked the helpless woman, repeatedly smashing her head on a metal bar, before dragging her across the packed bus by her hair and hurling her out the open doors.

The victim's children were still on the bus but when she tried to get back on Pope threw her off again and blocked her way while Boyle got off the bus with her own push chair.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV.

Following the attack, the victim suffered a bloodshot eye, bleeding from a cut inside her ear and was bruising all over her body.

Her oldest daughter who witnessed the attack still suffers from nightmares since the assault.

Pope and Boyle were charged on April 12 and appeared at Hendon Magistrates' Court last Thursday (May 19) where they pleaded guilty to common assault.

Detective Sergeant Brad Crossley, from the Barnet Beat Crimes Unit, said: "I think this sentence is well merited as it was a sickening attack on a lone woman with children. Neither of the convicted showed any remorse for their actions either in interview or in court.

"The CCTV on the bus provided compelling evidence of the despicable nature of this attack. In cases like this, it is important that a strong message is sent that this sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable and the consequences will be a prison sentence."

Pope was sentenced to four months imprisonment while Boyle, of Wynford Avenue, Islington was sentenced to three months suspended for a year.

She has also been ordered to attend a women's centre for 36 hours, conduct 100 hours of unpaid work and has been banned from using the number 83 bus for 12 months.
