A 20-year old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Wembley, and is being questioned over two other rapes in the Harrow area last week .

A police spokeswoman confirmed the arrest this morning.

She said: “A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on a 27-year-old woman in The Fairway, Wembley at 11pm on Tuesday, 2 September.

“Police are also questioning the man about the rape of a 30-year-old woman in Harrow at 1.30pm on Wednesday, 27 August and a sexual assault on a 33-year-old woman that occurred shortly before on Kenton Road, Harrow.

“The man is currently in custody at a north west London police station.”

Meanwhile locals in the area have been asking what more could be done to stop incidents in the area.

Alison Coxon, who lives near the crime scene, said: “News of the rape sent a shiver down my spine as I imagine it did for everyone who lives and works around this beautiful part of Harrow.

“Women are told to take sensible precautions when walking alone and not put themselves in vulnerable positions.

“However, the state of the footpaths over these fields are so appalling that it makes it impossible to walk with any degree of confidence at all due to the need to focus on where to put your feet, so as not to stumble.

“I contacted Harrow Council last year about this very issue, but they didn’t even bother to reply to my email.

“As the autumn draws near, dark nights pose a hazard to innocent dog walkers like myself or any woman who needs to walk this route home. I feel Harrow Council are being wholly irresponsible by not addressing this dangerous matter.”

A council spokesman said: “This was a terrible ordeal for the woman involved and our thoughts go out to her.

"The police are currently investigating and we would urge anyone with any information to contact them.

“We regularly inspect our footpaths and parks to ensure they meet our maintenance standards and take action if we fall short of these standards. We also work closely with colleagues from the police to minimise crime and to improve safety.”

Wednesday's attack happened close to where two 14-year-old girls were raped in the woods in The Grove Open Space in 2008 for which two young men were later jailed at Harrow Crown Court.

Anyone with information on any of the incidents is requested to contact 020 7161 2834, the police non-emergency line on 101 quoting ref 2010260/14 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
