Forty balloons launched into the skies above London over the weekend as part of a special event.

The balloons took off from Shoreditch Park at 5am and climbed up over the Thames and across central London's skyline on Sunday morning (June 7) as part of The Lord Mayor's Hot Air Balloon Regatta.

The capital's stunning skyline was filled with the colourful balloons for around an hour, prompting many to tweet about the sight using #hotairballoons and #BalloonRegatta.

One wrote: "I was on Waterloo Bridge overlooking the city. A truly magical sight."

The regatta was organised by Exclusive Ballooning in support of The Lord Mayor's Appeal, working to raise awareness and funds for the charity and to promote the City of London and those associated with it.

The Lord Mayor's hot air balloon was the first balloon to take off, followed closely by well-known city corporations, who have also chosen to support the charity, including: Aberdeen Asset Management, Fortnum & Mason, Stirling Ackroyd, Renishaw, Ricoh, British Airways, British Telecom and Universal Pictures.

This event was arranged and devised by Exclusive Ballooning's chief pilot Andrew Holly and Philip Saunders, of the City of London Corporation.

Exclusive Ballooning set out to raise £50,000 from the event and the current total raised by is £78,884 - and counting.

A cheque will be presented to current Lord Mayor Alan Yarrow at Mansion House next week.
