There has been much crowing over the EU finally ditching many of the complex regulations around the sale of fruit and veg.

In reality such rules are common in world trade - bulk buyers and importers want to be sure they get exactly what they order. Brussels in many cases is simply acting at the behest of commerce and member state governments.

The EU has now recognised that the old rules are dated and that modern consumers want more choice, particularly for organic produce that doesn't come in supermarket-style shapes and sizes.

Liberal Democrats welcome the fact that the EU puts the interests of consumers before those of supermarkets.

Unlike other parties who simply attack 'Brussels bureaucrats' for rules on 'curvy cucumbers', Liberal Democrats consistently work hard to improve how the EU operates to make it more responsive to the needs of its citizens.

This common-sense approach to regulation should be welcomed by Euro-friend and Euro-foe alike.
