A train has derailed near London Waterloo station after reportedly colliding with a freight train causing travel chaos for passengers.

South West Trains (SWT) has already warned commuters to expect disruption until close of service on Tuesday (August 15).

The crash happened shortly before 6am. SWT has described it as an "operational incident" and is yet to confirm the exact details of the derailment.

SWT did, however, tweet at 8.20am there had been a "low speed partial derailment" between Waterloo and Vauxhall.

Passengers are warned to avoid the station completely on Tuesday.

London Ambulance Service (LAS) said three people were checked over at the scene but nobody has been injured.

Points and signalling failures between Vauxhall and London Waterloo has further exacerbated the situation, with knock on delays across the network - including at suburban Surrey stations.

It is understood all lines in and out of Waterloo are currently affected after initial reports said the issues were affecting five lines.

Commuters are advised to use alternative routes where possible, while tickets are being accepted on other London services - including the London Underground.

Eyewitnesses report seeing the train having seemingly hit a Network Rail engineering train, with the front carriage leaning at around and the front carriage is leaning over at an angle.

What is SWT advising?

SWT tickets are being accepted on all TfL buses, London Underground and all services to London Paddington and London Victoria.

Train services running to and from London Waterloo and Vauxhall will be cancelled, delayed or revised at short notice, SWT has warned.

Commuters are advised that trains will have to wait for platforms to become free and may have to wait outside London Waterloo.
