Passengers have been advised to avoid London Waterloo ALL DAY on Tuesday (August 15) due to fresh signalling and points failures.

South West Trains (SWT) reported major disruption to services in and out of the capital from around 5am, including reports of a derailed train.

SWT took to Twitter to commuters, advising they avoid travelling to or from Waterloo because of signal failures, points failures and an "operational incident".

Disruption is expected until close of service of Tuesday with tickets being accepted on TfL buses and all services to London Paddington and London Victoria.

London Waterloo is in the midst of ongoing improvement works as part of a £800 million upgrade which has closed ten platforms at the station.

The new platforms are creating room for longer trains to run to and from Waterloo and to increase capacity.

The disruption is understood to have been caused by a fault with a set of points between Vauxhall and London Waterloo. As a result, five lines into and out of London Waterloo.

Further to this, SWT is investigating another problem near London Waterloo station which is expected to cause some further delay.

Reports on social media suggest a train has derailed following a collision with an engineering train at London Waterloo. SWT is yet to confirm the nature of the operational incident.

Disgruntled customers vented their frustration on Tuesday morning: "Are you advising me not to go to work? Thank you so much. Much love as always," said Louis Bouwers.

While Chris Dunn wrote: "The earlier I wake to attempt to get to work, the more platitudinous your tweets."

SWT has advised due to the time and location of the signal failure, peak trains and stations will be very busy and passengers may want to consider using alternative routes.
