For lifelong Harrow resident Doun, a life without his wife was unthinkable.

After marrying in 2011, his wife Ting was diagnosed with a large and aggressive tumour on her spine just a few weeks after the special day.

The cancer slowly ate away at her spine, impeding mobility, while taking a strain on both her dignity and their marriage. She sadly passed away in early September last year.

Before his wife's death, the couple were given the opportunity to enjoy a 14-course meal at Heston Blumenthal's restaurant, The Fat Duck, in Berkshire thanks to Willow and the special days they offer.

“Willow gave Ting a huge boost when she needed it most," Doun said. "The cancer ate away at her spinal cord leaving her constantly in pain and paralysed from the chest down.

“Her special day meant we could have a break and enjoy a day out together.

"By then we'd spent so much time as a carer and patient that it was nice to have a breather and spend some time on a date as husband and wife, eating and chatting like we used to.

"I know she held the memory of that special afternoon to the end.”

Every special day aims to provide beneficiaries and their loved ones with a break from the realities of their diagnosis and treatment.

Doun decided to raise money for the organisation that gave him and his wife a day to remember.

The Virgin London Marathon, in April, will be his first as he joins 37 other runners representing the Willow foundation.

Bob Wilson, Willow life president said: “This is a really tough challenge and one that we're honoured Doun has chosen to take on for Willow.

"It's a testament to the positive impact of Ting's special day that Doun has taken on this challenge, and already raised a great deal in sponsorship.

“Doun's dedication will enable Willow to help many more young adults just like Ting at a time when they need it most”
