The meeting is expected to hear evidence from a series of experts about the environmental impact of HS2, such as pictured here where the line would cross the Grand Union Canal at Harefield.

Mr Tizard said: "We hope to persuade the committee of the disastrous impact that the operation of the line would have on Ickenham and the completely unsuitable siting of a major construction site in the village."

The committee is expected to address topics including: Noise, road closures and demolitions due to major construction and tunnelling work at West Ruislip, Old Oak Common, Euston and other sites; increased congestion and air pollution, including around Euston and the A40 where nitrogen dioxide levels are already excessive; potentially thousands of construction vehicle trips daily; the potential impact in the Colne Valley of building a viaduct across the river, lakes and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
