LIBERAL democrat candidate, Afifa Pervez, has won the Wembley Central by-election with 1,195 votes.

Labour's Jayesh Mistry came in second place with 934 votes, Tory Yasmin Butt won 423 votes, Independent Tom Stevens received 240, while Martin Francis, of the Green Party, came fifth.

The vote was counted last night at Brent Town Hall.

It means the Liberal Democrats have retained the Brent Council vacated by the former Lib Dem councillor for the ward, Vijay Shah, who was jailed for 12 months in May.

The 45-year-old, of Clayton Avenue, embezzled £60,000 from the accountancy company where he worked.
