Further to recent correspondence on the subject of allotments, I do hope that your original correspondent, Ms Rustin, together with the Green Party, will be supporting the campaign for the Government to suspend all approvals for use of neonicotinoid insecticides for use on crops.

These substances are considered by many scientists to pose a major risk to honey bees and other pollinating insects.

The campaign is supported by, amongst others, the Soil Association; Friends of the Earth; and the RSPB. (See their websites for more information.) The Soil Association reports early successes in getting some retailers to withdraw from sale products containing these chemicals, so action now can make a difference! The FoE is asking people to write letters to their local garden centres asking them to remove these products from sale and over 1,000 have already done so. Their website at www.foe.co.uk has a down-loadable form of letter that your readers can use.
