The continued decline of the high street is putting businesses at risk, with supermarkets and the internet getting stronger.

That’s why the Federation of Small Businesses is re-launching our Keep Trade Local campaign, encouraging businesses to work together to make their high street the place to visit.

Councils must look at easing parking measures and ensure those who are entitled to small business rate relief get it.

Small businesses are the heart of a community: they generate wealth, employment and opportunity. But with people working longer hours and the growth of one-stop-shopping and the internet, these places are at risk. Our recent index showed 47 per cent of retail respondents’ revenue had fallen over a three-month period.

The federation is calling on the council and MPs to look at how they can make grassroots economies prosperous by helping their independent high street businesses grow. They must think about the three Ps’ – planning, parking and procurement as a way to boost and encourage local trade.
