KEEP Britain Tidy’s recent survey claiming that Hounslow’s streets are getting cleaner was obviously carried out before the autumn leaf fall.

Hounslow is an attractive tree-lined borough but every year leaves fall off trees and need to be swept away.

Richmond Council manages to deal with this by employing teams of staff who are out and about from the start of the season but in Isleworth at least, the chance of seeing a leaf sweeper is as rare as the sight of a red squirrel.

Reports through the council’s website are not responded to, the problem being particularly acute around Isleworth Town School and on surrounding local roads.

Hounslow needs to get a grip with this issue and allocate more resources, as it has done with litter picking. Will things improve with the new PFI contract? I doubt it but I would be happy to be proved wrong.
