Homes at a high rise council block in Isleworth have been evacuated and are without power and or running water after a water tank burst.

Although no flats are understood to have been seriously damaged, water has got into the lift shafts at the 40-home tower in Percy Gardens, which is managed by Hounslow Homes on behalf of the council.

The block's electrical supply has been switched off for safety reasons and it is not known whether it will be possible to safely restore power before tomorrow.

The block is currently without water but a Hounslow Homes spokeswoman said drinking water had been delivered to residents.

She said work to repair the water tank could not commence until the power had been isolated by contractors from Scottish & Southern Energy.

"Hounslow Homes and Hounslow Council are working together with utility services to resolve the issue as quickly as possible," she added.

A Hounslow Homes employee at the site said a rest centre had been set up at Isleworth Public Hall and contingency plans were being prepared to house residents overnight if power could not be restored in time.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said it was called to the scene at 7.11am and sent two crews, who departed just over an hour later.
