Tomorrow is your last chance to sign a petition to ban spitting in Hounslow, which already has more than 3,800 signatures.

Hounslow Council's petition, which calls for a ban on spitting in public, closes at the end of tomorrow, Wednesday, December 18.

The petition, which has cross-party backing, was launched on September 23 this year. The council must prove public support for a new bylaw in order to get government approval for a ban.

If spitting is outlawed, anyone caught in the act could be hit with an on-the-spot fine, like those handed out for littering.

Councillor Ed Mayne, Hounslow's cabinet member for community safety and regulation, said: "The response by our residents has been magnificent and this is the final push to encourage people sign the petition.  We stand a good chance of convincing the Government to allow us to ban this filthy habit in Hounslow."

You can sign the petition online at or in paper form at all borough libraries and at the Civic Centre, in Lampton Road, Hounslow.
